Peacetime Violence in Latin America

In this series of papers I investigate the use of violence by police and criminal groups in Latin America, finding that much of this violence stems from strategic responses to well-intentioned attempts at law enforcement. As part of this work I created an original panel data set on local homicide rates in Venezuela.

The Rise and Persistence of Chavismo

In this series of papers and in-progress book project, I investigate how Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez came to power and how he stayed in office. This work documents Chávez’s successful bid to raise the stakes of power and describes the political fallout.
